I didn’t expect to think about death and tamales in the same scroll.

But that’s exactly what happened when I saw this ad from a family-run tamale shop in L.A.

It started with a simple statement: “If you accidentally fall out of a plane, most people think you should aim for water.”

From there, it plays like a serious message. A man is plummeting through the sky.

“Water doesn’t compress well,” the narrator says. “The impact feels the same as hitting concrete.” So, the ad suggests other places to land. Then comes the twist:

“For example, The Original Tamale Company.” Smash cut to close-ups of tamales. That’s the ad.

I saw it on Instagram, then clicked through to a Business Insider story linked in the comments. Turns out the spot was made in under ten minutes by the founder’s nephew, who runs the restaurant’s marketing.

The script? Written by ChatGPT.
The voiceover? AI.
The budget? $0.
The result? Over 22 million views and a noticeable spike in foot traffic.

So, why did it work? In my opinion, it’s because it’s funny, simple, and doesn’t try too hard.  In a world of hyper-edits and glitzy, million-dollar campaigns, this stands out for its simplicity. It’s not overly produced or packed with marketing jargon; it just commits to one weird idea and nails the punchline.

And the timing helped. The video riffed on a meme that was already trending. The business didn’t overthink it. It made something in the moment, hit post, and let the internet do the rest.

That’s the takeaway here: You don’t always need a big budget or a fancy shoot to make something great. You just need one timely, creative idea that makes people feel something enough to share it.

Not bad for 46 seconds and a tamale joke.

Here's what you should learn:

  • Commit to one idea and nail the punchline. The ad worked because it didn't second-guess itself. Clarity of concept beats complexity every time.
  • Simplicity outperforms production value. In a sea of overpolished, big-budget content, lo-fi can stand out.
  • Ride the wave. The ad riffed on a trending meme, so the audience was already primed to engage. Timing and cultural relevance can do a lot of the distribution work for you.
  • Speed is a creative advantage. The ad was made in under ten minutes. Waiting for perfect conditions often means missing the moment. Sometimes "ship it now" beats "polish it later."
    and creatively.
